Frequently Asked Questions
and Answers about the USS CHIVO (SS-341)
All Hands Reunion - 14 - 18 October, 2009.

Below you will find some frequently asked questions and answers about our reunion.   These are not specific questions, but I have tried to summarize and answer the most often asked questions.   If you don't find your answer here, or if you just want more information, feel free to contact me directly at Justan2@earthlink.net.

Will the Beach Cove Resort give me the special CHIVO room rate if I come before or stay after the actual reunion dates?
We have contracted with the Beach Cove Resort to offer our same group rate to crew members and their families (based on availability) for early arrivals and / or late departures.  Please remember, this offer is based on availability, so book early.

OK, so what are the dates of the reunion?
The official reunion activities begin on Wednesday afternoon, Oct 14th.   Our last official activity, the banquet, is on Saturday evening, Oct 17th.   If you want to be a part of the full reunion you should make reservations for four nights, starting Oct 14th and  checking out on Oct 18th.

If I can't come to the whole reunion, what are the best days to be there?
Wow... now you're putting me on the spot.  We don't have the tours and activities booked yet for this reunion, but here some general thoughts.

The first day is really a half day.  Things get started in the afternoon, and we spend the evening getting to know each other.  In the past we have announced and introduced our crew as they arrived, done "qualification cards" finding friends and shipmates, and held a nice opening ceremony.

The second and third days are filled with area tours and group activities.  Often we have "sea story" sessions, raffles with prizes, auctions, memorabilia displays, and lots of fellowship.

The last day is pretty busy.  The wives may hold a luncheon, while the guys have a business meeting to plan the next reunion.  There is a Memorial Service with military honors for our crew members on Eternal Patrol.  We pose for our group picture, and finish up the day with a cocktail hour and banquet.

Can we bring family members, children, grandchildren, etc., to the reunion?
Absolutely!   We even encourage it.   How else are they going to find out that all your wonderful sea stories are 100 per cent true.   Family members are welcomed to join us on tours, in the hospitality room, and at the banquet.   They are invited to join us in everything we do, and they can book their rooms at our special rate.   Plus they can enjoy our special room rate before and after the reunion.

Make it a special family vacation for everyone.

Who is coming to the reunion?
This is a tough question.   Past reunions have been extremely well attended by spouses and significant others from all year groups - plus families and children.   As much as I would like, I cannot publish the reservation list (it's a privacy thing), and I would be advertising whose homes will be vacant (burglary targets) during the reunion.   If you want to know if your shipmate or buddy will be at the reunion, give him a call ...

and if he's not coming - invite him.

What is the "Uniform of the Day" (dress code for you civilians) for the reunion?
This is a another tough question.   A few years ago, I tried to answer it with "Beach Casual," which created more questions than it answered.   So here goes again - Our reunions are very casual and almost anything is acceptable.   I will be wearing CHIVO shirts, and a ball cap most of the time.   If it's cool, I will wear slacks or jeans; and if it's hot, shorts.   Most people do dress up a little for the banquet with perhaps a sport coat and tie, but this is not a requirement.

The bottom line is we are there to relax and have some fun.

I am flying to Myrtle Beach.   Do I need to rent a car?
We make every effort to make rental cars unnecessary.   The Beach Cove Resort provides a complementary shuttle service to and from the airport, but prior arrangements need to be made with them.  So when making your reservations, be sure to confirm your shuttle arrangements.   The optional group tours will  have transportation included and other activities take place on site.   I think that anyone can have a great time at the CHIVO reunion without wheels.

Sit back, relax, and leave the driving to us.
